Showing watches in the Pending state enables an admin user in the service provider to configure and manage the estate before it goes live. They can add detailed descriptions and references – data which is needed by an ITSM tool when parsing any alerts.
Refer to the SD-WAN device setup page for details on how to configure your SD-WAN network to work best with Highlight.
Controller watch pending - watch creation
There is a watch creation option on both controllers and devices. Auto is the default. Setting Watch creation to Pending on the controller sets this option to Pending on all discovered devices. This controls the creation of any uplinks, tunnels, tests and switches. Changing this setting will impact items discovered in the future but will not impact the state of any existing items.
Pending
Selecting this means any uplinks, tunnels, tests and switches on a device will NOT be created and are instead visible only on the Controllers Admin page. These will not gather data so cannot change the colour of a heat tile nor send an alert. Note: If watch creation is set to Pending then interfaces which are down, failed or disconnected are discovered in the pending state. If these watches are later enabled, they show as red in Highlight.
Auto
This is the default option. Selecting this means any uplinks, tunnels, tests and switches on a device will be created as enabled and start gathering data. These may change the colour of a heat tile and send an alert if a measurement is below threshold.
Enabled watches have been created and are gathering data. Both "Collect data" and "Show data" are checked. These can change the colour of a heat tile and send an alert if they have issues.
For watches which have either "Collect data" or "Show data" unchecked. Hover to view message. The name is shown in amber text instead of black.
Disabled
Disabled watches have been created but “Collect data” and “Show data” options are unchecked. The name is shown in red text instead of black. Thus, these watches do not gather data so cannot change the colour of a heat tile nor send an alert. Watches are disabled when they are newly created as disabled, are not in use or represent recently decommissioned services. They can be enabled at a future date.
For devices and watches where the parent controller has been disabled, the name is shown in red text instead of black. On hover, this shows "Status inherited from device/controller".
Pending
Pending watches are placeholders for watches that could exist and are only visible in the Controllers admin page. These will not gather data so cannot change the colour of a heat tile nor send an alert. This gives a service provider control of the watches that are created on a watch by watch basis. Watches are not shown as pending unless they are UP.
Discontinued
For items which have been deleted on the SD-WAN network. The row is faded red. On hover, this shows "Item cannot be found". Discontinued watches were previously created watches but are no longer available on the SD-WAN network. These will be automatically deleted, usually after 30 days.
For watches where the parent device has been deleted on the SD-WAN network. The row is faded red. On hover, this shows "Parent device cannot be found".
Bulk actions
Bulk actions are only available for watches, not devices or controllers. Check boxes appear AFTER a filter has been applied, not with Show All selected.
The bulk actions available change depending on which watch filter is applied. See definitions section for a description of each state.
Pending - options available are:
Create all selected watches as enabled, which means "Collect data" and "Show data" are checked. The watches are gathering data, can change the colour of a heat tile and send an alert if they have issues.
Create all selected watches as disabled, which means "Collect data" and "Show data" are unchecked. The watches are not gathering data, cannot change the colour of a heat tile nor send an alert if they have issues.
Enabled - options available are:
Disable all selected watches, which means "Collect data" and "Show data" are unchecked. The watches are not gathering data, cannot change the colour of a heat tile nor send an alert if they have issues.
Disabled - options available are:
Enable all selected watches, which means "Collect data" and "Show data" are checked. The watches are gathering data, can change the colour of a heat tile and send an alert if they have issues.
This option is available for both enabled and disabled watches. Delete converts previously created watches to pending.
